Building Freshwater Counsel past year three
Freshwater Counsel just passed its third birthday, and I've been reflecting on what we've built. We started in 2023 with client calls from the bathroom of a 600-square-foot apartment, and today we place IP litigation partners at growing practices and help midlevel associates land multiple offers. Right now my focus is the same thing that got us here: creating genuine options for lawyers and helping firms move decisively when the fit is right.
Writing about career agency for lawyers
A lot of my recent writing comes back to one idea: you have more control over your career than you think. Lately I've been working through the leverage window in the early associate years, what separates high-agency lawyers, and the small interview moves that build a real connection with firm partners. The throughline is agency paired with strategy, helping litigators make moves that hold up over time.
Hosting Khurram's Quorum
Khurram's Quorum is where all of this started. I began the podcast in October 2020, well before the agency, and the business grew out of it. Each episode is an in-depth conversation with a managing partner, judge, or high-performing lawyer about career decision-making, leadership, and what it takes to build a durable legal career. Hosting it keeps me close to how the best lawyers actually think about their careers.
On the lighter side
Outside of work, Emma and I are in Milwaukee raising two young kids. I've also become someone who pays close attention to sleep and recovery, tracking it with an Oura ring after years of assuming I had my health dialed in. Protecting good sleep has turned out to be one of the better long-term bets I've made.
